Apple iPhone Users Get Busy Signal Buzz

If the new Apple iPhone exceeds expectations in any one category it is getting the hackers off the couch to figure out the electronic key needed to unlock the new phone. When Apple unleashed its newest and unparalleled Apple iPhone device, it was designed to work only with AT&T with the SIM chip included, but locked so the only way the phone will work is with a two-year contract with AT&T the carrier formerly known as Cingular.

While several people seem to love the Apple iPhone and have many nice things to say about it music and video player, being forced to sign with a specific wireless carrier for cell phone and internet browser use has several hackers locked in their rooms searching for the door to another service. Despite AT&T's threat to prosecute anyone who unlocks the secret to their technology and is able to unlock the phone, the effort continues. Experts predict that within two weeks of the release the Apple iPhone will have been unlocked and being used on other networks.

Currently, the Apple iPhone is somewhat restricted to the United States for no other reason than economics. An average two-year contract with AT&T for over 4,000 minutes of use and unlimited wireless internet access will go for about $60 a month. For the neighbors up north, there is only one Canadian cell phone service compatible with AT&T and, due to less competition, a lesser level of service is going for about $200 a month. Add to that the $600 price tag for an Apple iPhone and this one-of-a-kind device is out of reach for most Canadian users.

The Apple iPhone was unleashed with great fanfare but initial silence by Apple about the coming technology seemed to fuel the hype behind the phone. The concept is a simple one: having every communications device known to man all in one handheld unit. Touch screen technology has been around for years, but having it installed on a device that fits into the back pocket of even the tightest pair of jeans made it one of the hottest, must-have commodities that people just had to have, despite the price and questionable service contract.

There are plenty of pitfalls with the new Apple iPhone, but none of them pose a permanent problem as the solutions will be easy to come up with, if they are'nt already in place, such as the digital camera also working as a video recorder. Easy fixes will be coming for being able to add ringtone the user chooses and will most likely add a better search tool for its address book. These are just a few of the complaints by the first users of the new Apple iPhone that should be easy to overcome.

Users Pushing For Additional Memories

Despite having the capability to play music and movies, as well as roam the internet and send and receive email and offers the functionality of a computer, the eight megabytes of memory has many people forgetting why they wanted it so bad in the first place. There is no place on the Apple iPhone for an additional memory card and its configuration with Windows and PC users is questionable at best. Of the Windows Office Suite, only Outlook is fully connectable with the Apple iPhone calendar. Outlook Express will not work, having some finding the need for the additional expenses of new software.

The battery, not replaceable by the user is another quirk of the Apple iPhone, similar to it music player, and has to go back to the factory for a new battery. Although the battery life has been greatly extended, up to nine hours with movie watching, music listening and browser viewing. A charging dock for the internal battery, which is included, promises to restore the battery from a 10 percent level to 90 percent in under two hours.

The Apple iPhone Supports Web 2.0

The Apple iPhone is not just a music player which also acts as a cellular phone; it is also fully loaded to support Third Party Web 2.0 applications.

What is Web 2.0 applications?
Web 2.0 applications allows users to experience greater interactivty and more importantly, it empowers product owners and merchants, the ability to carry out secure data access and transactions online. This is similar to the stock purchases and bank funds transfers which many of us are familiar with and it is also used for online purchases from sites like Amazon.

This breakthrough in technology allows the iPhone to be on the fore front in the digital age. Imagine this, you have just used the iPhone's built-in 2 megapixel camera to take photos of your family vacation. You uploaded the pictures onto a web-based photo sharing website like Flickr and you send a text or email broadcast to your friends. They would then visit your site and leave live interactive comments, similar to services found on Twitter. In addition, you could even add links to real-time print-on-demand photography services, and your friends can request for these photos to be printed and sent to them the next day.

The real breakthrough comes when you found out that you are able to pay for your purchases with iPhone. Imagine being able to travel without your wallet while making payment at a parking meter, buying cinema tickets and paying for a meal with just a single touch of a payment button on your iPhone.

Other exciting innovations
With the iPhone's technology architecture, it also means that developers can create innovative applications for the device. For example you could very well operate the functions of your home with your trustworthy iPhone. Imagine being able to turn your sprinklers and your sprinklers on and off, turn on the air conditioning of your room before you return home and being to record your favorite movies on television with just an instruction sent to your home automation network through your phone. Of course, when you are away on vacation, your iPhone will provide real-time video access to your home's security system, giving you the ability to see that your home is safe and sound, even when you might be hundreds of miles away.

While the iPhone will initially be available only in the USA on June 29 2007, it will also be available in Europe by the end of 2007 and in Asia the following year. The iPhone marks Apple's first entry into the cellphone market and judging by the responses seen so far, it certainly looks set to make a big splash.

How The Iphone Will Change Movie And TV Viewing Forever

Unless you've been living in a cave, under a rock, or on the Dark Side of the Moon you know that on Friday June 29th Apple's new iPhone finally hit store shelves. Thousands of Apple and mobile phone fans waited in hundreds of lines for hours just for the privledge of dropping $499-$599 on the shiny new mobile phone/internet device/widescreen iPod. Analysts and tech geeks hailed the iPhone's arrival as a momentus event in the cell phone industry. I'm here to tell you that history will show the iPhone's release as one of the single biggest events in the history of independent filmmaking.

What, exactly, does the iPhone--a mobile phone/internet device/widescren iPod--have to do with indie filmmaking? Well, a lot. The movie download market must prepare for a great new phase as we look forward to more and more great devices capable of playing our content.

For independent content to survive and thrive, it must move to new delivery devices like Apple TV, iPod and now the iPhone. Support for these new devices will lead to growth in the audience for indie content. Many "mainstream" consumers will not view indie films at screenings, festivals or DVD. The films are too hard to find, often barried in video rental store shelves or playing in small art house theaters. This has been the case for the past few decades. Once every five years there is a breakout hit--a Clerks or Blair Witch--that gives the indie community something to rally around. The independent movie press declare, "We've arrived. This is the 'Year of the Indie'". Just as quickly as these hits arise, the excitement dies down and the great content made in the aftermath gets lost in the shuffle.

Now, for what may truely be the first time, consumers will have in their hands a great portable media device. You may argue that the iPod with video or the PSP have existed for a few years. But, these are devices that most people do not *have* to carry at all times. These are "luxury" devices that we carry when we want to. Cell phones are vastly different. Most Americans now carry their cell phone at all times--to the gym, on the bus, walking through the mall, at the ball game. We always have our phones with us. Now that Apple has delivered "the best iPod ever built" (Apple's words) and snuck it inside a phone, we now have a captive audience that will always have viewing capability.

This is, or has the potential to be, huge. Just look no farther than the iPhone's home screen. Right there on that gorgious 3.5" screen is a direct link to everyone's favorite dancing-cats-meet-dancing-teenagers clip sharing site, YouTube. Think about that. Apple put YouTube directly on the home screen of their revolutionary new device. Now, this could be entirely motivated by a new advertisting or search revenue deal Apple has struck with Google. But even if it is, the fact that YouTube is on the home screen of the iPhone can not be ignored.
Apple believes in mobile entertainment. They created the iPod so that we all could enjoy all our music at any time or place. Now, we are closer than ever to that dream for video. The iPhone's 3.5" screen has a resolution higher than many computer monitors. It displays MPEG4 H.264 video beautifully--better than any portable device ever has. These quality features combined with the simple fact that people will actually have the device with them, lead to great market opportunities.

Of course, the iPhone is, for now, a niche device. It's high price tag mean that it won't be found in the hands of many teens or college students in the near future. But just as with all technology, the price will drop over time. The iPhone will also force other handset makers and cell providers to design better devices. Devices that compete with the iPhone. When this happens, consumers win.

HungryFlix.com is ready to help independent producers, filmmakers and musicians in this new distribution world. We believe that this new class of mobile devices will open the doors to great indie content. It is time to get onboard. There are hundreds of thousands of movie and music fans out there with new devices that are hungry for great content.

Synchronica Syncs Apple iPhone to Microsoft Exchange

Corporate oriented users may have reason to rejoice: access to Microsoft Exchange is available. SV

Royal Tunbridge Wells, July 11, 2007. - Synchronica plc, international provider of mobile synchronization and device management solutions, today announced that Mobile Gateway 3.0 supports over-the-air synchronization between Microsoft Exchange and the newly launched Apple iPhone. This will allow mobile operators and service providers to offer mobile synchronization to business users and prosumers, enabling them to receive corporate email on their iPhones without having to ask their IT manager to open the firewall or install additional software.

Mobile Gateway seamlessly integrates with the corporate IT infrastructure and does not require the enterprise to expose IMAP and SMTP in their Exchange servers or install additional connectors - issues that often raise security concerns with IT administrators.

Instead, Mobile Gateway uses Microsoft's secure Outlook Web Access (OWA) to retrieve email from the corporate Exchange server, a service enabled by many enterprises to provide users with access to corporate email from home or while traveling.

iPhone Browses Diagnostic Heart Images and Videos

Has it been a month since the iPhone was released? I cannot believe the number of products and services that are being made available. Maybe it will be the iPod of the cell phone world! SV

Heart Imaging Technologies (HeartIT) announced today that medical images can be viewed on Apple’s new iPhone. (See examples at http://www.heartit.com.) Physicians can simply click on a web link sent via email by one of their colleagues, enter their password, and, for example, instantly view movies of a patient’s beating heart halfway around the world. They can even put their colleagues on speakerphone and carry on a medical consultation while simultaneously browsing through the imaging results.

Viewing medical images traditionally requires dedicated workstations costing tens of thousands of dollars, which in turn are connected to proprietary picture archiving communications and storage (PACS) systems costing millions of dollars more. In order to view medical images, physicians must literally drive or walk to one of these workstations. Recent advances in World Wide Web browser technologies and the web sites that utilize their rich features, collectively referred to as Web 2.0, are challenging these expensive and cumbersome proprietary approaches.

WebEx for Mac OS X requires Mac OS X 10.1 or later; 256MB RAM or more; DSL, cable model, ISDN or faster Internet connection is recommended. IE 5.1 or later or Netscape 7 with Java enabled is also required. (Java is used to handle the WebEx software install).

Because WebEx for Mac OS X was developed prior to Safari's completion as a 1.0 release, Safari support wasn't ready to go with this initial release, according to a WebEx spokesman contacted by MacCentral. The company plans Safari support, however.

Cool Video Games For Your iPhone

The Apple iPhone comes with a lot of cool stuff, but one thing that is noticeably missing from the feature set is a mobile game. Just about every cell phone hitting the market these days comes with some sort of Java-based video game, whether it be Snake, Bejeweled, or a trial version of Urban Asphalt. But not the iPhone. It's got nothing in that department.

If you're itching to get your video game fix on the iPhone, you can finally scratch that itch because a handful of websites have come to your rescue. None of them, as far as I can tell, actually install any games on the iPhone, but they grant you access to some basic web-based titles via the Safari web browser. Unfortunately, because the iPhone's Safari does not support Flash or full Java, you're stuck with some really basic Javascript-based games.

Check them out at iGiki, fun4iPhone, and MacMost. Naturally, these games can also be played on any Internet-connected computer (or Pocket PC).

Just How Productive Can You Be With An iPhone? A Day In The Life Of A Former CrackBerry Addict

Eric Zeman
http://www.informationweek.com/blog/main/archives/2007/07/just_how_produc_1.html

This is the second half of my one-day miniseries on whether or not the iPhone leads to business productivity compared to a BlackBerry. Here is my take on how the iPhone does with the Internet versus the BlackBerry Pearl. Is it a waste of time, or a time saver?

As with everything, that depends a lot what sort of work you are doing. Most of what I do with the Internet during the day is reading, scanning RSS feeds and basically making sure my eyeballs see all the news that's occurring out in the world. Google plays a big role in that, and the ability to perform searches is key.

First off, the Pearl and the iPhone I used both ran on the same network, which is to say AT&T's EDGE network. I can't say that either is super speedy for browsing. In fact, WAP sites on the Pearl often took as long to load as some full Web sites do in Safari. The little speed boost that AT&T gave its network on June 28th certainly improved browsing speeds for both devices. Here's the actual breakdown.

BlackBerry:

The browser is mediocre at best. It may be easy to launch from the BlackBerry home screen, but the controls are clunky if you ask me. The menus are not intuitive, and even with the QWERTY keyboard, pecking in URLs can be a pain in the neck, er, thumbs. I have found the best way to browse the mobile web it to create as many bookmarks as possible, which cuts down on the amount of actual typing you have to do. This is definitely effective for the Pearl, though accessing bookmarks takes a few steps.

Browsing speeds aside, though, most sites work well enough even if they don't look all that great. For sites that don't have WAP versions, the browser would attempt to recreate the entire page. With such a small screen, it led to a lot of scrolling around to see the content you wanted or needed. Navigating sites such as Craig's List were downright painful. The site that matters most to me, Google, loaded just fine and produced the results I needed it to, especially related to search.

But there are many sites that are simply not friendly to mobile devices. The bus company I use, for example, does not have a mobile site, and the regular site was completely unusable on the Pearl. This meant I couldn't check the bus schedule that I needed to find out when I could catch a ride home. I had to call the bus company instead, and they aren't that friendly to phone requests about bus schedules.

If you have a lot of forms-based Internet usage to do, it all depends on whether or not the forms are formatting for WAP browsers or full browsers. It can really be a mixed bag.

As a bare bones means of accessing the Web and certain information, the Pearl gets the job done adequately. There are definitely better browsers on mobile phones.

iPhone:

The iPhone is far and above superior at the Internet. I fully admit to eating some crow here, but the Internet experience is not that bad over the EDGE network. It compares to using the Pearl in terms of speed, but you get a much richer Internet. Bookmarks are simple to set up and use in the Safari browser. And you get the full version of Web pages. That makes a big difference.

Using the Safari browser, I was able to access and use my bus company's Web page and get the schedules I needed with out any problems. If you use the browser to sign into Gmail, you have access to some of the other Google services. I was able to get into Google Apps, for example, and see all my documents. I could open all of them, and perform searches with in the Apps environment, but once inside a document, you can't interact with it beyond reading what's in it. You can't enter text or compose new documents or make edits to documents. I was able to "share" documents with other users, though, which is helpful. I couldn't do any of that on the Pearl. Since I am a heavy user of Google services, ths works out really well and actually enhances my productivity quite a bit. But it would be better of I could edit the documents, even in a minor way. Other Google services, such as Blogger, didn't work.

For the one Web site I write for most, being able to see and access all of its features is a Godsend. On the Pearl, I could only reach the WAP version of the site. Now I can see all of it, and navigate and interact with the entire site from the iPhone. I can even pen posts from the iPhone. That also is a big productivity enhancer for me.

The large screen on the iPhone also goes a long way to making the experience a better one. Also being able to use the touch functionalities of the device itself to scroll around, and zoom in and out make navigating inside large Web sites far easier.

Conclusion:

The iPhone outstrips the Pearl's browser big time. It's not even a fair comparison, really. The iPhone is so much richer and more fully realized, that it makes me never want to browse WAP sites again. Having access to the full version of the Internet (albeit, without Flash and other animations) in a device so small really is useful beyond words. The speeds aren't as fast as some I've seen on EV-DO equipped smartphones, but both devices are handicapped similarly here.

If your work requires access to the (mostly) full version of the Internet, the iPhone works better than the Pearl.

For me, the end result between email and Internet is a tie. The cons of the poor email capability are negated by the amazing Internet abilities.

Does that mean I am going to keep the iPhone? I dunno yet. I have until Friday to make up my mind...

By STAFF REPORTS
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 07/10/07

Fresh off the launch of its much-hyped iPhone, Apple may be preparing to offer a less expensive version that could be used with several wireless carriers, a telecommunications industry analyst says.

JP Morgan Chase analyst Kevin Chang said the new model could sell for less than $300, according to reports by Bloomberg News and MarketWatch. He based his speculation on patents filed by Apple and unidentified component suppliers, the reports said.

Sales of the new model, to be based on Apple's iPod Nano music player, could start by the fourth quarter, Chang said.

The new device likely would be controlled by a scroll wheel similar to those used by iPod, and it would have more limited functions and Web browsing capabilities, according to the reports.

Fewer functions would enable Apple to sell the handset to more carriers, the reports said. The iPhone, priced at $499 or $599, is currently sold only with AT&T wireless plans.

Subsidies by carriers could push the price of the smaller model to as low as $99, Chang told Bloomberg News.

iPhone Medical Software by Unbound Medicine

I got to use the application at the Apple Store today.
While I could disable the WiFi, I could not use the EDGE service to browse the Internet.
Using WiFi, I found the applications very responsive. Perhaps most amazing was the ability to choose a letter from the index for a topic. Despite the small size of the letters, I was amazed that I could choose the correct letter between A and Z, 9 out of 10 times with my index finger! Having used a PDA of some sort for almost a decade, I would sworn that a stylus would have been needed. The ability to enlarge the text will be appreciated by many who have graduated to bifocals.
While the iPhone does not permit loading applications the way Symbian and Windows Mobile do, you can use the cellular or WiFi connection to view books online. While not as convenient as non-connected access, it also means that the references should be updated centrally as with any ASP system. Let us know how what you thinkSV

Apple Inc.'s iPhone launch has been marred by delays in AT&T Corp.'s phone activation system, leaving some people unable to use their new toy throughout the weekend.

People who buy the iPhone, which went on sale in the U.S. Friday evening, are required to activate it through Apple's iTunes software on their home computer. They choose a rate plan, authorize their credit card number and the phone should be activated soon after.

Apple has said the process should take only a few minutes for people being assigned a new phone number, and "up to six hours" for people transferring a number from another operator. But for some the wait has been much longer, according to postings on Apple's iPhone message board and elsewhere.

"It has now been 48 hours and my iPhone is still the prettiest paperweight I own," wrote one frustrated user.

"Nightmare indeed," said another. "I've been waiting 11+ hours now. I got the phone after a somewhat reasonable one-hour wait at the Albany, NY store, then spent 4+ hours talking to AT&T and Apple trying to get the thing activated."

Others said their phone was activated in a matter of minutes.

AT&T was not available to comment in Europe on Monday morning, and Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

An AT&T spokesman told the Wall Street Journal newspaper that most activations were occurring in a few minutes, and that the operator was working to fix the remaining issues. An unnamed source told the paper that about 2 percent of users were being affected.

The delays cast a shadow over what appears -- so far -- to have been an otherwise successful launch of the iPhone. The device sells for US$500 or $600 depending on the amount of memory on board, plus an activation fee and the cost of the service plan from AT&T, which for now has exclusive distribution rights for the iPhone in the U.S.

When people buy a new cell phone the device is usually activated in the shop where they buy it. Apple and AT&T had billed the self-activation process as "another example of how AT&T and Apple have partnered to bring innovative new features to our customers."

Opinions were divided as to where to lay blame. An iPhone buyer who claimed to work for AT&T said in a message posting that delays were inevitable and not the fault of either company. Thousands were trying to activate their new phone simultaneously over the weekend, the person noted, and the activation requests were lining up at AT&T's network switches "like 30,000 or so people throwing basketballs at one hoop and hoping to make it in."

Others said AT&T should have lined up additional capacity for the activations.

Some said they expected the problems to be ironed out by next week and the incident to be forgotten.

"Activation is going to happen eventually. Why did you invest so much of your time and energy in this?" one person wrote on Apple's board. "Life is too short to worry about this type of thing."

There were some other gripes about the iPhone, although it was hard to tell how widespread issues are. Several users complained that the phone's iPod function stopped playing music when they used it as the same time as the Safari Web browser or Google Maps. Others complained of a bug that caused the e-mails they sent via GMail to appear in their inbox.

Other users, including a person who responded to a posting on the iPhoneFAQ.org Web, said they were unable to transfer an AT&T business account to their iPhone, and were told they would have to start a new, individual account.

NEW YORK -- As leading consumer electronics retailers find themselves excluded from the launch of one of the most anticipated CE products in recent memory, namely, the Apple iPhone, several have a message for Steve Jobs -- "Why not us?"

Many say that their customers are already asking for the iPhone, unaware that the product launched exclusively through Apple's stores and AT&T's nearly 1,800 stores (formerly Cingular stores) and AT&T's direct-mail operations.

The snub by Apple is even more painful for CE dealers who also sell AT&T cellular phones.

J&R Music World, New York, a long-time Apple dealer, said, "This is a product J&R is interested in as both an Apple and AT&T dealer. We think we can do a good job with it. Our customers have expressed a great deal of interest in the product," noted a spokesman.

Datavision, New York, said it sells 5,000 MP3 players a month and its customers are asking for the iPhone. The store said it could sell 2,000 or more units at launch if it were given full inventory.

Many of the leading CE dealers built reputations on being the first to stock and demonstrate new technology and some wondered why select CE dealers, particularly those who are also AT&T dealers, were not included in the launch.

"We're the guys that sell the 103-inch Plasma TV from Panasonic. (NYSE:MC) We were one of the first retailers to carry Sonos. We have the know-how and customer base to sell the iPhone," said Tom Galanis, merchandising VP for 6th Avenue Electronics, Springfield, N.J. He added, "A cellphone store is a cellphone store. My feeling is they are shooting themselves in the foot ... Apple would be better served by picking a few higher-end retailers that have a track record of selling high-end technology."

Amazon.com also noted that its strength is in selling to customers seeking the bleeding edge. "Amazon has eager, early-adopter customers who are very interested in new technology. And we've seen through many of the high-end electronics we've introduced over the years, including cameras and MP3 players, that our customers are very interested in new products and trends," said Noah Hershman, audio/video director.

Galanis said customers with home networks would like to work through the store to add the iPhone. "We sell elaborate home networks and people view their homes or their kids with the babysitter when they are out to dinner. Because of the iPhone's large screen, it works fine with that application, and our customers want to put it on the network."

He called the iPhone "an incredible piece of equipment."

Leading CE retailers said they are repeatedly calling their Apple contacts only to be told that there is no time frame for opening distribution to traditional retailers. Only one retailer said he was told distribution would open in six months.

Apple did not respond to a TWICE inquiry.

The iPhone is a $499 to $599 smartphone/iPod that has no keypad but uses a touch-sensitive screen. It allows Web browsing including Google, Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO) ! and YouTube searches. Users can read Web pages while downloading email in the background over Wi-Fi or EDGE. The iPhone also provides access to information such as traffic and map directions.
