Dungeon & Hero

iTunes Link

Dungeon & Hero is a RPG by Chillingo Ltd. $2.99

Dungeon & Hero is what I see as in the 2nd Tier price range of RPG's at $5 but could easily be sold for more. It is currently at the sale price of $2.99. This game is similar to Chronicles of Inotia in some ways. It is also better than Inotia in some places but also worse in others. This game really brings the old school feel to the game, unlike the newer console version of Inotia. There are three characters to choose from to save the Empire from destruction. You can start your adventure with a sword bearing Knight, Bow and Arrow shooting Elf or a magical Wizardress. The game as other RPG's involve alot of grinding, quest doings and button mashing. The last one is more obvious in this game as you have the attack button and choose when to attack.

I'm not really a fan of 'old school graphics'. The way I see it is that if you have all these tools and great consoles, then why make it look like it is from 20 years ago? I would rather graphics like Inotia which are at GBA standard at least. I can understand why they do it, and Dungeon & Hero is one of the only games with these graphics which I like. There are a few icons and such that are really pixellated, but generally this game is great graphics wise. The fact I like this the most is that there is a fair amount of detail put into everything, not just green trees and grey rocks scattered everywhere. The controls I find quite annoying. There are small arrows which you must tap or hold to move your character. I found a way to just touch the screen and move that direction but other than that it is quite hard. I really liked the tap where you wanted to go option in Inotia, and haven't found a better substitute for that in this game sadly.

The soundtrack in this game is what I expected. Nice easy music to listen to that changes as you change your surroundings. Even though it repeats itself a bit, there is no complaining coming from me. There are some fighting sound effects, but not much I found. This is a game to keep the sound turned on for.

As with any RPG this game is about grinding. There are quests in the game which help you achieve this. Unlike the ones in Chronicles of Inotia they are more defined and just say stuff like kill x amount of these and y amount of those. Each level that you get you get some upgrade points to put onto your stats, and every 8 levels gives you a new skill. The story behind the game (From the knights perspective anyway) is that he wants to join the army to fight for the empire and starts off to prove himself for it. The game is quite a challenge to begin with, and if you aren't careful the cute porcupines will be killing you with ease. One thing I didn't like in the game was that at the beginning nothing actually came and attacked you, they only attack once you strike. This means you have free roam of a place, almost like you are invisible. The different areas that you can go to have slightly more meaning than in Inotia, as they are connected and not joined by randomly placed Transport pads. The game is pretty basic and hardly any knowledge of how to play these games are needed. Multiple games can be saved at once with three slots for the whole family.

This game will take a long time to finish, and has alot of replayability with multiple characters to play the game through with. This game is right up there with Inotia and should be priced higher than it is. At $2.99 this game is an absolute steal and I would recommend that you buy it. Another great game developed by CH Games

Gameplay- 9/10
Graphics- 8/10
